Kart Kanyon, Aztec Speedway wrap up busy weekends

AZTEC – A busy weekend of racing action at Kart Kanyon and Aztec Speedway featured drivers from across the region capturing main events at various levels.

Here’s a recap of racing action.

Racing at Aztec Speedway on Friday night saw three-wide action throughout the night and Leon Shim get the checkered flag in the IMCA Hobby Stock’s main event. He was followed over the finish line by Kyler Duggins, Hunter Ferrell, Mylee JoAnn and Kaison Zufelt.

Of the 16 POWRI 600 Wing Micro Sprints drivers that competed Friday, it was Connor Lundy from Peoria, Arizona, who got the win. Lundy was followed by Spencer Hill, Connor Jacobs, Grant Schaadt and Devon Amos.

Steffan Carey found the checkered flag in the IMCA Stock division and was followed by Allen Bradley, Jeramy Hughes, Traci Bradley and Travis Sutherlin. Meantime, Rafe O’Brien got his first career win at Aztec Speedway in the Dwarf/Mod Lite main event. He was followed by Keaton Shore, Corey Pearson, Shane DeVilbiss and Gabe Shim.

Katie Barthel took the win in the Sport Compact division and was followed by Cody Witcher, Ted Neergaard, Abbi Barthel, Grant Hobbs and Tess Greenwood.

In the POWRI 360 Wing Sprint Car Desert Series main event, Las Cruces native Rick Ziehl crossed the finish line first, ahead of Caleb Saiz, Jesse Baker, Alex Pettas and Blair Cooper.

Brian Carey crossed the finish line in the Northern SportMod division followed by Jimmy Wilson, Chad Green, Rick Spangler and Waylon Hale. Albuquerque’s Hunter Sandy found victory lane in the IMCA Modified division ahead of Julian Garcia Jr, Cameron Martin and Julian Garcia Sr.

On Saturday night, the weekend main event featuring POWRI Wing Micro Sprints took place with more than $4,000 in prize money on the line.

Spencer Hill worked his way through traffic to take the top spot and earning a spot in victory lane. Hill was followed by Grant Schaadt, Devon Amos, Joshua Huish and Bradley Huish.

Aztec Speedway also crowned midseason champion during the Saturday program, including Julie Keeler in the Northern Sport Mods division, as well as Shane DeVilbiss, who earned the award in the Dwarf/Modlite category.

Regan Tafoya was named midseason champion driver in the Modified division in awards handed out on July 29 at Aztec Speedway.

Jeremy Hughes is the Stock Car Midseason champ, while Katie Barthel owns the championship in the Sport Compact division. Regan Tafoya is the Modified midseason champ while in the Hobby Stock division, there was a tie between Jason Duggins and Hunter Ferrell for the championship.

On the track, Steve Bitting Jr. of Phoenix crossed the finish line first in the Hobby Stock Class followed by Hunter Ferrell, Leon Shim, Mylee JoAnn and Stacy Sutherlin.

Meantime, Steffan Carey swept the weekend in the Stock Car Division followed by Allen Bradley, Darell Cordary, Travis Sutherlin, and Chris McCurdy Sr. In the Dwarf Car/Modlite division, Leon Shim found himself in victory lane followed by his son Gabe, as well as Michael Phay, Keaton Shore and Corey Pearson.

Camron Spangler made a mid-race pass to steal the win in the IMCA Northern Sportmod division, followed by Julie Keeler, Waylon Hale, Brian Carey and Chad Green.

RANAI TOLER

The POWRI 360 Wing Sprint Cars had 17 cars check in for the evening with Caleb Saiz taking the win over Lorne Woffard, Jesse Baker, Spencer Hill and Don Grable.

Katie Barthel swept the weekend in the Sport Compact division followed by Cody Witcher, Ted Neergaard, Jon Kinder and Grant Hobbs. And in the Modified division, Julian Garcia, Sr. crossed the finish line first in the Modified class followed by his son Julian Garcia Jr, Hunter Sandy and Cameron Martin.

Kart Kanyon recap

More than 44 drivers took place in racing action at Kart Kanyon Speedway on Friday night.

Brayton Carley found his way to the finish line in the Youth Red Plate Division and was followed by Brendan McLaughlin, Barrett and Khloé Tenski, with Wyatt Calcote rounding out the top five.

In the Stock division, Bowyer Carley finished first followed by Mark Rodgers, Justin Hogue, Rivver Higgins and Abby Harpole while Carley also won the Super Stock Class followed by Bob Harter, Regan Tafoya, Tyrone Yazzie, and Beau Blakley.

Griffyn Bandy won the Youth Rookie Class followed by Luxe Jaquez, Alei Dineltsoi and Caulin Horse.
