AZTEC – The opening weekend at Aztec Speedway and Kart Kanyon was not short of excitement for fans or racers.

Five classes signed in for the Friday night program at Aztec Speedway. Stock cars were the first to take to the 3/8-mile oval track, and Josh Cain of Rio Rancho took the win ahead of Darell Cordary, Race Fisher, Allen Bradley and Traci Bradley in the feature event.

Hobby Stock 2023 track champion Hunter Ferrell started the new season in victory lane, followed by Kyler Duggins, Evan Ray, Louis Valencia and Camron Spruell.

Katie Barthel continued her winning ways in the Sport Compact division followed by Ted Neergaard, Dustin Craig, Cody Witcher and Jaden Kibel.

The Spangler family took the top three positions in the Northern Sportmods featured event after a wild race. Danny Concelman’s race ended abruptly after a slow car was trying to be pulled off the track and Concelman flipped his 4D Northern a few times before coming to a stop.

After a long red flag, leader Camron Spangler pulled off the track to cool his car down, forcing him to the back of the pack on the restart. Aaron Spangler got the win over his two sons – Camron Spangler in second and Brody Spangler in third. Chad Green and Jimmy Wilson were fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Dwarf/Modlite division held the biggest class of the night with 18 cars checking in. John Foster of Glendale, Arizona, got the win after a wild race, ahead of Shane DeVilbiss. Ross Ham advanced 12 positions to take third. Joe Esquibel and Dan Morris rounded out the top five.

Saturday’s action wasn’t as eventful as opening night, but there was excellent racing.

Darrell Cordary got his first win in a Stock Car, followed by Carlos Garcia, Race Fisher, Allen Bradley and Tony Hill.
