Johnny Herrera Wins  September 3 at, Aztec Speedway, 2011

The 32nd Annual Floyd Reynolds Memorial was taken down by Albuquerque, N.M.s Johnny Herrera Saturday night. Johnny was a last minute entry for this race after after spending the last several weeks on tour. Herrera took the lead on lap 16 after as he charged past Jason Tanner also of Albuquerque. Tanner held the lead for a few laps after he had eased by Bill Mitchell. Mitchell faded to 8th and Tanner settled for 3rd as Shon Deskins of Waddell, Az. moved into 2nd. As the checkers fell, Deskins motor let go but he managed to hold 2nd by .028 sec. Bo Baker of Grants, N.M. was 4th and Mike Colegrove of Phoenix was 5th.

Herrera ran 5th for the first half of this 25 lapper before making his move to the front. The first three cars were within .165 sec. of each other. The race saw four cautions and one red flag. Steve Nix of Santa Fe, N.M. did a couple of end over end flips in turn 2 on lap 21. Also in the crash were Jason Grady of Farmington, N.M., Nick Rael of Albq.,N.M., and Jon Taylor of Albq.,N.M. Nix was taken off the track in an ambulance and checked out OK.
Hererra will be back tomorrow night to try to make it a clean sweep at the 32nd Annual “Floyd”.

A total of 30 sprint cars were on hand tonight so a “B” main of 15 laps was run with 12 cars racing for the last 8 spots available in the main. Scott Box of Albq.,N.M. won this event with Randy Smith 2nd, Rick Johnson 3rd, Cody Mansfield 4th all of Albq. and Josh Grady of Farmington in 5th. The last three to transfer were Grant Garagnon, Tim Knight,Jr. and Brett Ream.

The CLMA/DIRT Super Late Models were on hand tonight with 29 cars signing in at the gate (33 were entered). Seven states were represented by some of the best late model drivers in the West.

Four heats saw Terry Belcher,jr of Phoenix, Az, Paul Banghart of Tucson, Az., Dave Garmann of Brighton, Co. and Kelly Boen of Henderson, Co. take the wins. In doing so, Kelly Boen set a new track record of 15.334 sec with an average speed of 77.334 on this 3/8th mile track.

With the car count at 29 a “B” main saw 12 cars racing for the top six spots. Garrett Alberson of Las Cruces, N.M. won with Curt Daniels of Paonia, Co. 2nd. In 3rd was Nate Beacham of Grand Junction, Co. Fourth through sixth were Albq. N.M. drivers, Cooter Frazier, Steve Francis,Jr. and Ronnie Bell.

In the 25 lap feature, Terry Belcher,jr. of Phoenix was a DNS and Scott Lewis of Brighton, Co. was moved into the feature. Dave Garmann led the first lap and then Kelly Boen put his #07 in front and never looked back as he lead the rest of the race. Racing for 2nd was a show as Dave Garmann, Dean Moore, Jeep Berry and Paul Banghart traded places several times. In the end, Dean Moore of Grand Junction, Co. took the 2nd spot with 3rd going to Dave Garmann of Brighton, Co. and 4th to Jeep Berry of Grand Jct. Co. Settling for 5th after running a strong 2nd was Paul Banghart of Tucson, Az. Rounding out the top ten were: Jason Davis of Grand Jct. Co., Dan Hendrikson of Rapid City, S.D., Scott Lewis of Brighton, Co., Cooter Frazier of Albq. N.M. and John Kuchar of Henderson, Co. Garrett Alberson of Las Cruces, the winner of the first CLMA/DIRT feature at Aztec in July of this year, finished 11th.

Only one car did not finish. And in a dash for cash between four cars for six laps, Phoenix, Az’s. “Mighty” Mike Colegrove took the money that Inland Kenworth of Farmington, N.M. had put out there for the taking. All four drivers pocketed some cash. Also picking up some cash courtesy of Inland Kenworth was Kristy Smith. She finished one spot short of making the main by way of the “B” main. That’s called Bubble Money!!

One more feature saw 17 mini sprints from N.M. and Arizona running 20 laps. The Brewers seem to won this division as Mike Brewer lead most of the race with Kenny Brewer moving into 2nd in front of 3rd place Jacob Johnston. Cody Mansfield was 4th and Cody Dons 5th. Rounding out the top ten were Devon Amos, Paul Martin, David Gay, Cliff Cormany and Matt Deskins. Cody Mansfield also drove a sprint car tonight for Truman. Matt Deskins’ dad finished 2nd in the sprint feature.
