Championships Decided At Aztec Speedway In The Final Points Race For 2011
Lots of clean, close and exciting racing this evening with very few cautions as championships were decided in two classes. The other classes were decided before the green fell.
In the IMCA modifieds, Porter Smith went into the feature with a 19 point lead and sealed the deal on the track championship with another impressive win. Smith started 5th row inside and worked the traffic like the pro he is to put the Smith Ranch #7P in front on lap 13. From there on the run was smooth and easy as the outcome was going to be obvious. Porter Smith also captured the New Mexico state championship for 2011. In the first 12 laps, Leon Shim and Jason Keeler swapped the lead along with JJ Harpole. Finally taking 2nd was Kevin Brown followed by Kevin Faddis, Robert Reed and Danny Bradford. Shim and Keeler spun on the backstretch as the checkers were flying and did not finish.
In the IMCA sport modified feature, Julie Boettler chased early leaders Ace Eavenson and RL Henley for a few laps until Eavenson spun out of the lead. On the restart Boettler quickly moved to the front with Zach Hamilton and others chasing. With a few to go, Hamilton took the lead in his Hot Chassis #14 and went on to clinch the win and the track championship. Boettler settled for 2nd but is consoled with the New Mexico state championship. A first for her gender. In 3rd for the feature was Joey Klemish, fourth was Randy Eitel and Wayne Soares took 5th. Rounding out the top ten were: RL Henley, Ace Eavenson, Kristi Tenski, Michelle Reed and Juantia Faddis.
In the IMCa stock car feature eighteen cars ran 25 laps with four lead changes and lots of three wide racing. When the checkers fell Frankie Hendershot won over Lee Moss by .009 seconds. An impressive run for 3rd place was turned in by Shane Devilbiss. Devilbiss started in 18th spot to move up through the field and challenge for 2nd at the end. In fourth was Danny Stevenson followed by Kenny Hendershot for 5th. The rest of the top ten were, Richard Trujillo, Rex Higgins, Larry Bradley, Traci Jennings, Steffan Carey and Darin James. Higgins had a 6 point lead for the championship over Frankie Hendershot. Higgins takes 7th with Hendershot winning….awaiting official point count on the stock car championship.
The hobby stock feature was taken down by Dennis Spencer in a very fast and competitive race. Randy Dorsett was on Spencer’s bumper most of the way once Spencer put his #07 in front. In 3rd was Amador Milliano with Jeremy Bradley fourth and Darrell Cordary 5th. Tommy Valdez was 6th followed by Jessie Asbe, Howard Asbe and Jerrett Guilory. Spencer is the champion with 9 wins at Aztec Speedway this year. He is also the track champion of Fairgrounds Speedway in Cortez, Colorado with 8 wins there. Very impressive year for Dennis “Grump” Spencer.
The mini stock feature was won by Jim Griffin with Amanda Tenski 2nd and Brandi Morrow 3rd. Amanda Tenski wins the track championship.
Congratulations to all the winners and champions from the staff of Aztec Speedway.
